“Molí de l’Oli” Interpretation Center

The Molí d'Oli in Cervera del Maestre is a traditional indjustrial facility which was used until the 1920s for the production of olive oil The mill building of medieval origin, gradually grew and was adapted to the new technological needs of oil production. Despite the fact that there are some inscriptions that speak about modification works of the building during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, there is no doubt that the first building was built earlier, possiblty as a a lodge on the old road from the coast to Morella.

Millenary olive trees in Vinaròs

Vinaròs, which is located in a great plain close to the Mediterranean sea, in the north of the Comunitat Valenciana touching to the river Sénia, has a wide municipal area with different landscapes, from orchards to dry lands. The ancient settlements show the presence of the first settlers in Puig de la Ermita and that olive growing was a very important factor for the local economy over centuries, of which nowadays still remain some zones of olive groves, with a total of 26 Millenary Olive Trees in the whole municipal area.

Rossell

Rossell is situated to the right of the Sénia river, with the Cervol river and the high mountains of the Tinença de Benifassà as its limits. From la Pena de Bel, Rossell extends an entire carpet along a large and majestic plain in which the olive trees obtain their maximum prominence and for this reason, it is known as the sea of olive trees. Some of them were probably planted by the Romans and, after being cultivated by all civilizations, they can still be admired today.

Olive trees in Benicarló

Benicarló is located next to the Mediterranean Sea, in the region of the Baix Maestrat, and has been known since the times of the Arabs for its agricultural wealth, its vegetable gardens and its "cenias" (a special hydraulic machine). The Ilercavones, from El Puig de la Nau, already established trade with the Phoenicians and Greeks who most likely brought the olive trees to this territory. Its great agricultural wealth today lies in market gardening: artichokes and citrus fruits, but in the dry land areas there are still olive, carob trees and almond trees.

Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi is located in the north of the province of Castellón, reaching the Sénia River. There is a high concentration of olive trees, some of which were planted by the Romans and cultivated by all civilizations with a total of 153 Millenary Olive Trees spread throughout the municipal territory, but especially found in the Els Muntells, Fontanals, Mas Na Cabanes and Mas d'en Pons areas.

Càlig

Càlig, in the Baix Maestrat region, lies in the north of the Region of Valencia. Within its municipal boundaries, it is home of a rich natural, cultural and landscape heritage, where, despite of the recent changes in cultivation, there is still a large number of olive farms. Among them, it is worth highlighting the existence of 56 Millenary Olive Trees inventoried, especially in the Pou Bonet, Pedralta, Crevetes, Solanes and Cabanils areas.

CANET LO ROIG "EL OLIVO"

The municipality of Canet lo Roig, located in the Baix Maestrat region has the largest number of millenary olive trees in all of the Valencian community: in 2019, there were 1,131 registrated and, some of them are among the most monumental. For this reason, with the collaboration of the owners, the town hall and the Mancomunidad Taula del Sénia, 3 areas and in addition a route (SL-V58) have been set up to admire the landscape and the best specimens.

Finca Varona la Vella, family owned for 4 generations, is located in the municipality of Sant Mateu, about 2 km. from the town center, situated on the slope of the mountain La Bastida, at an average altitude of 370 meters above sea level, southwest facing and with an area of about 18 hectares, of which 12 ha. are dedicated to olive cultivation.

Traiguera

Traiguera, located in the north of the Valencian Community, in the region of the Baix Maestrat, has a large number of olive trees on its territory, some of which were planted by the Romans and are concentrated around the ancient Roman Via Augusta as it passes through the municipality. Currently there are 589 specimens inscribed in the Inventory of millenary olive trees of the Sénia Territory, mainly in Freginals, Albagues, Pla d'en Bord, Mas de la Sansa, Vilagrossos, Basqueres, Mas de Caperó and la Castella.

Tracks Maestrat recommends a circular btt route in Castellón that will take between 2, 3 or 4 days to complete. It is a Tracks Tour along footpaths and tracks through forests, thousand-year old olive groves, quarries, beaches and paths alongside the Mediterranean.
