The IVAM is the leading museum of modern art in the city of València. Its programme of activities includes exhibitions from its collections, organising temporary exhibitions and publishing catalogues and other publications that further investigate the subjects covered in the exhibitions. It also holds conferences, courses, workshops and concerts related to the exhibitions and other areas of modern art. The space where the museum is located, the Centre Julio González, is a recently built construction, opened in 1989, used to exhibit the museum collection along with other temporary showings. It also has a room called Sala de la Muralla in the building's cellars where one can see the remains of the medieval fortifications of the city. An essential part of any visit to València.
