Caving

Comunitat Valenciana

About three-quarters of the Region of Valencia is formed by limestone rocks, which favour the formation of cavities as a result of the dissolution of the water that is infiltrated into the subsoil.

With a height of 235 metres, l’Avenc Pilar, in the village of Barx, is the natural cavity with the greatest depth of accessible terrain. Other important cavities include the Mina Virgen del Amparo in Artana, and the Cueva de la Autopista in Gandía. The deepest well, 129 metres deep, is located at Alto de la Hiedra (Quatretonda) and the cavity with the largest room is located in El Campillo (Tous). Its only room has a volume of 300,000 m3 and an area of 8,500 m2.

Active tourism companies distributed throughout the Region of Valencia offer us the opportunity to enter the wonderful and surprising world of caving with respect for the fragile environment of these places and with the relevant safety measures for the enjoyment of these activities. There is also the possibility of cave diving.

You can learn more about caving at the Federació d’Espeleología de la Comunitat Valenciana (Caving Federation of the Comunitat Valenciana).

If you want to visit spectacular caves from a more fun or touristic perspective, you can also visit impressive caves adapted for your sightseeing pleasure such as the Coves de Sant Josep with a underground river in the Vall d’Uixó, the Cueva del Rull in Vall d’Ebo, Cueva de las Calaveras (Cave of Skulls) in Benidoleig or the Caves Canelobre in Busot.
